Alexandra von Braun

AboutAlexandra von Braun’s work investigates presence, absence, and states of transition through works on paper, performance, and installations. Simple materials and repeated gestures make palpable the tension between what remains, what changes, and what disappears.

Working primarily with ink on paper, she adopts a reduced vocabulary: black and white, simple tools, measured marks. The surface records gesture, pressure, and pauses. Repetition and variation translate time into traces, revealing differences within a continuous action. In her installations, this inquiry extends into space. Suspended papers, slight movements of air, and sustained sounds bring the fragility of materials into relation with the physical presence of those who move among them. The body and the duration of the encounter become part of the work.

The fragility of the supports and the variations in the marks point to the precariousness of what we consider stable. In a present shaped by environmental change, conflict, and social fractures, her practice examines the experience of loss and the shifting points of reference through which we inhabit the world. Attention becomes a way of staying with these conditions of uncertainty, recognising the traces of what remains and the vulnerability of what is still present.

EducationAlexandra von Braun graduated in Artistic Disciplines from the University of Turin in 2005 and completed a Master’s degree in Theatre and Performing Arts at the University of Paris in 2008.

Her interdisciplinary practice spans painting, installation, music and theatre, developing through an ongoing exchange between these forms. Gesture, repetition and duration connect her work across different materials and contexts.

Her experience in theatre includes work with Commedia dell’Arte masks and a sustained exploration of movement and bodily expression. She has also created films and participated in film festivals in Italy. Alongside her university studies, she studied piano and developed a musical practice across several instruments.

Painting, performance, filmmaking and musical composition continue to inform one another as her practice evolves, finding expression in works on paper, live actions and installations that bring together image, material, sound and movement.

Presence emerges through the interaction of body, material and duration. The mark registers an embodied act, while repetition makes its differences perceptible. As the surface opens into space, perception extends through movement and listening. Reduction becomes a method of attention, allowing the work to constitute a field of relations in which presence is continually negotiated.
